What is my role in my community? Daily Plans: Monday, 17 October

1) Warm Up: Time Traveler (10 min)

Kids drew these, Ikea made
and sold them!
  1. Option 1: Write about your earliest memory. Include 7 sentences.
  2. Option 2: Draw and describe a monster you imagined or were told about when you were younger. Or, do the same thing for an imaginary friend. Include 7 bullets in your description.
  3. Option 3: Think about your favorite age and what made it so special. Write a 7 sentence letter to yourself NOW from yourself at your favorite age. If you think your favorite age is yet to come, you can write a letter to yourself NOW from your future self.
2) Literacy Block + Lesson Plan Part 1: Childhood Development + Family Fair Proposals (35 min)
  1. Before you read:
    1. Break into 5 groups based on numbers.
    2. Go to the link here. As a group, select two topics from the menu UNDER your age to partner read.
  2. As you partner read:
    1. Jot down what kids who are the age you have been assigned enjoy, struggle with, etc.
    2. Note any other facts you find interesting.
  3. After you read:
    1. As a group, draw a stick child.
    2. Above the stick figure write the age of your person.
    3. On one side, list things a child your age might enjoy, on the other side put struggles. Underneath the stick figure list any other interesting facts. Aim for 15 bullet points total. 
    4. Meet with your Family Fair group. Check your activity here. What ages do you think will like your activity most? Least?
    5. Write your plan. (page 2)
    6. Visit the stick figures posted around the room as you plan your activity. How will you make your activity work for kids of more ages?
3) Lesson Plan Part 2: MicroUN Resolution Research and Decision Making (20 min)
  1. Review your resolution.
    1. Sweatshop Resolution
    2. Israeli-Palestinian Health and Conflict Resolution
  2. Finish your research by filling in your document:

    What will you resolve?
    1. Find two articles from news sources based in your country that relate to your topic. If you need to, you may try news sources like NPR or BBC if you cannot find enough from a news source from your country. *Remember, you are representing your country as if you were from there! Using your country's media will help you do that!*
    2. Suggested search terms:
      1. Sweatshop: Country name: Worker rights; sweatshop; working conditions; child labor laws; health of sweatshop workers
      2. Israeli-Palestinian Health and Conflict Resolution: Country name: Israel-Palestine conflict; assistance for refugees; refugee crisis; refugee status; immigration; Hamas; crimes against humanity; international aid
    3. Fill in your research guide.
  4. After you research:
    1. Complete the rest of the anticipation guide by discussing your findings with your group.
    2. Begin to discuss what changes to the resolutions you would call for and how you would vote.
    3. Complete your speech pre-writing.
    4. Final speeches are due on Friday, 21 October.

  1. Add HOT questions and summaries to at least two days worth of notes for any class.
  2. Fill in your planner with events and due dates for this week.
  3. Write a SMART goal for the week.
