...write a poem.
...identify some characteristics of some successful people.
...set a goal and propose a related project.

1) Warm Up: Creative Writing, Poetry Month Edition (15 min)
  1. Option 1: Random Answer Generator
    1. With a partner whose paper you cannot see, choose a question writer and an answer writer.

      1. The question writer writes 20 questions all starting with "Why...?"
      2. The answer writer writes 20 answers all starting with "Because..."
    3. Move next to each other and read your poem call-and-response style. 
  2. Option 2: Suspended
    1. Write a poem about something "suspended" - a leaf floating to the ground, a student from school, a musical note that keeps going, etc. 
    2. Use as many different verbs and adjectives as possible. 
    3. Bonus points (in pride and glory) for writing this poem in the shape of the subject of the poem.
  3. Option 3: Dear Poet
    1. Watch a video of a poet reading their poem here.
    2. Then, follow the directions by "Students-" to write a letter to that poet about their work. 
  4. Love writing poetry? 
    1. Consider sharing what you write at Karma Coffee's open mic night this Thursday!

2) Literacy Block: 9 Habits of Highly Successful People (20 min)

  1. Before you read:

    How do you find success?
    1. Add how you would measure success to the top of your paper.
    2. Share this with the class.
  3. While you read:
    1. Annotate the article with arguments, agreements, questions, etc.
    2. Check off each habit that you practice regularly.
  4. After you read:
    1. Based on this reading, write a goal you want to set for yourself in the near future in the margin of your paper. 
    2. Write why you would pursue this goal.
    3. Share your goal via Stand Up-Hand Up-Pair Up.

3) Lesson Plan: Personal Choice Project Brainstorming Stations (40 min)
  1. Go to Google Classroom and join AVID Spring 2017 Foster using the class code 4omtz6.
  2. Make sure that you get a copy of assignment "Personal Choice Project Planning". 
  3. Open the document and read through the purpose and tasks. Ask questions!
  4. Begin writing your proposal!
  5. If you finish your proposal, submit it. (DO NOT SHARE IT WITH ME, for the sake of my insanely overfull gmail :). Thank you!)

  1. Open your planner.
  2. Set a SMART goal for the week.
  3. Add your upcoming due dates, assignments, events, etc!
