1) Warm Up: 30 Second Elevator Pitches (7 min)
- Draw an item from the papers on your table.
- Take one minute to plan a speech selling your item.
- Share your speech at your table using Stand-Share-Sit.
2) Literacy Block: Giving Sales Pitches and Writing Speeches (25 min)
- Get your copy of the planning document.
- Choose who will read Giving Sales Pitches and who will read Speeches.
- While you read, Giving Sales Pitches:
- While you read, Speeches:
- Name our audience and rate their skill level.
- List 7 tips for writing an effective speech.
- After you read, work with your group to...
- Part 1: 1-1-2
- Take 1 minute to summarize the "Giving Sales Pitches" article. What is the inverted pyramid? Why do we need to anticipate questions from the audience? etc.
- Take 1 minute to summarize the "Speeches" article. What are some key parts of an effective speech? What are some grammar/style tips for writing an effective speech? etc.
- Take 2 minutes to discuss questions people may ask and what facts will hook your audience.
- Part 2:
- List 5 questions you anticipate students asking about your college. The space to do this is on the back of the first page of your planning doc, right under the poster template.
- Part 3:
- Answer these questions.
- Type (in the document HERE) a 30 second elevator speech that you will use to get students to stay at your table, ask questions, and not just fill in their scavenger hunt and run away. Consider:
- What is your hook?
- What facts will be interesting or shocking to the students?
- What do they need to leave your table knowing about your school?
- How will you use ethos, pathos, and logos?
- What tone should you be using considering our audience?
- I will print your 30 second speeches so you each have a copy. Be sure not to read directly from it!
- Review your to do list for today.
- Create/finish your presentation board.
- Practice your presentation. Our Mock College Fair is on Wednesday before Tutorials!
3) Family Time: Start SMART (Until the end of class)
- Open your planner.
- List any upcoming due dates, tests, family events, etc.
- Write an academic or personal SMART goal for the week. Make sure your goal...
- Specifically states what you will do.
- Is measurable.
- Can be attained/met this week.
- Is relevant to your success.
- And is time-bound - at the latest, you'll finish it by Friday.
