1) Warm Up: Maps and Lists, Oh My! (10 min)
  1. Draw a map or create a list responding to one of the prompts below.
  2. Include at least 5 locations or 5 simple pleasures.
  3. Add labels to your map: What makes each place special?
  4. Explain why you listed each simple pleasure.
  5. Stand Up-Hand Up-Pair Up and talk to two other people about your response.

2) Literacy Block & Lesson Plan: Where I'm From Reading and Pre-Writing
  1. Before you read:
    1. Define Culture and Identity:
      1. Vocab Intro
      2. Paraphrase the definitions of culture and identity.
      3. With your table, come to consensus about the definition of culture and identity. Add phrases to the board.
      4. List cultural groups we can be part of.
      5. Discuss what happens if people do not confirm your identity.
    2. Fill in your identity iceberg. 
    3. Above the water:

      2. What do you like to wear?
      3. What music do you like to listen to?
      4. What are your hobbies?
      5. What are your favorite foods?
      6. What are phrases you hear over and over again?
    4. Below the water:
      1. Where is your family from?
      2. What are your family traditions?
      3. What do you believe in?
      4. What rules do you follow?
      5. What are your values?
      6. What do you care about?
  2. While you read:
    1. Reading one: Doodle images that help you visualize the poem.
    2. Reading two: Highlight the parts of Lyons' poem that would be above the water on an iceberg. Underline the parts of Lyons' poem that would be below the water.
    3. Reading three: Add questions, comments, etc. 
  3. After you read: Return to your iceberg that you created. Add on memories, phrases, and ideas that you may want to include in your own "Where I'm From" poem.

  1. Fill out your planner for the week.
  2. Set a SMART goal for the week.
  3. Check your binder and notebook organization.
  4. Read to meet your book club goal for Friday.
