1) Warm Up: Learning Log (10 min)

  1. Take out your learning log (TOC #4).
  2. Complete the week 4 log.
  3. *Star* your favorite type of learning log.
2) Lesson Plan: Iceberg of Identity
  1. List identity communities with markers we can define ourselves and others by (ex: religion, socioeconomic status, familial relationships, gender).
  2. On two sticky notes, list two communities that other people may label you as a member of (ex: middle class, North Carolinian, brother, skater, gamer, teen, female, etc).
  3. On two more sticky notes, list two communities that you would either label yourself as that other people might not know/see OR two communities you would like to be a part of (ex: first generation college student, gay, Jewish, author, artist, engineer).
  4. Post these on the iceberg to show if they are visible or nonvisible markers.
  5. Debrief:
    1. What types of identity markers are easier to see? Harder to see?
    2. Did you find people who had similar identity markers to you? Different markers?
    3. Why do you think we are spending time to do activities like this?

    3) Literacy Block: Peer Evaluate and Publish

    1. Complete the peer evaluation sheet with your partner. Include documented writing concerns, pluses and deltas, and illustrations.
    2. Use the feedback from your partner to make revisions to your poem.
    3. Begin to publish your poem. Remember to include illustrations and/or a border.
    4) Closing Activity:
    1. Check your planner and SMART goal. List what you need to do tonight.
    2. Read to prepare for meeting your book club goal.

    1) Warm Up: SMART Success Workshop (15 min)

    1. Set a goal for how you will spend the next 12 minutes. Goal options:
      1. Reorganize your binder.
      2. Revise your notes with HOT questions, highlighted key terms, and summaries.
      3. Read for Friday.
      4. Work on homework.
      5. Write my "Where I'm From" poem draft.
    2. When you meet your goal, write what you accomplished on the board.

    2) Literacy Block: Before I die... (20 min)
    1. Before you watch, list: What types of art do you enjoy the most? Why? 
    2. While you watch: Describe the art that Candy Chang creates.
    3. After you watch: Discuss how Candy Chang's art connects to Where I'm From poems.

    3) Tutorial Time:

    1. Review the protocol for tutorials. 
    2. Watch the video below and discuss what makes an effective and ineffective tutorial. 
    3. Break into groups.
    4. State your final concept rating and choose who will present first.

      1. Presenters: Give your thirty second speech. Got it? Summarize the steps to answering your point-of-confusion.
      2. Classmates: Ask questions. Make sure to pause and ask clarifying question if the presenter's final summary has mistakes.
    6. Fill in three column notes as you present and ask questions.
    7. Write your reflection.
      1. I can make tutorials go more smoothly by... (Finishing my TRFs on time, asking more questions, bringing my notes, etc.)
