Performance Task: Where I’m From Poem

1) Warm Up: Reflect on First Quarter (1:27)
**What should I see at 1:22? What should I not see? Show me you've got this!**
  1. Give yourself a plus and a delta in response to first quarter.
  2. If school was like boy/girl scouts, what badge would you have earned? Draw it and list what you did to earn it.
2) Literacy Block (1:45): How to Read a Poem

  1. Before you read: Word Splash! When your teacher says, "We are reading poetry!", what happens in your head?
  2. As you read: 
    1. Look at the text features in the article.
    2. Create a cheat sheet for how to read a poem. (Hint: Use the table of contents and subheadings).
    3. Read "Read with a pencil" and "Examine the basic subject of the poem" while taking notes on what to do as you read a poem.
    4. Skim the rest of the article.

3) Lesson Plan (2:25): Where I'm From by George Ella Lyons
  1. Getting Ready:
    1. Listen to the poem.
    2. Partner read the poem annotating as you go.
    3. Discuss: What is the purpose of the poem? How does the poet convey her purpose?
    4. Watch the video below of another student's version of the poem.
  2. Your task:
    1. Write your own "Where I'm From" poem by Friday.
      1. Today: Prewrite and Draft
      2. Tuesday: Peer Edit and Revise
      3. Thursday: Publish (rewrite) and Illustrate
      4. Friday: Present in mini-open mic groups during Family Day!
