Big Idea: Structures lead to student support
Essential Question: How can the structure of a classroom managment impact learning?
Objectives: I can...
...compare two fictional high schoolers.
...describe different types of classrooms.
...evaluate learning from different points of view.
...have fun with my AVID Family!
**************************
1) Warm Up:
  1. Reflect on how AVID has gone for you so far.
    1. What has been wonderful?
    2. What would you like to change?
    3. What can I do to support you in reaching success?
2) Literacy Block: Teen Culture in Fiction
  1. Summarize the meaning of culture using the definition here: Culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization. These shared patterns identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.
  2. Visit this website based on the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli.
    1. Infer what Stargirl is like.
    2. How well do you think she fit the cultural norms of her high school?
  3. Read the excerpt from The Giver by Lois Lowry.
    1. “JONAS RECEIVER OF MEMORY Go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrance behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant. Go immediately to your dwelling at the conclusion of Training Hours each day. From this moment you are exempted from rules governing rudeness. You may ask any question of any citizen and you will receive answers. Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and Elders. From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for any medication. You are not permitted to apply for release. You may lie.”
      ― Lois LowryThe Giver
    2. Infer some of the cultural norms in the society Jonas lives in?
  4. Summarize in a point, example, and analysis sentence: Do the majority of teens in young adult books fit in with their culture? Why or why not?
3) Lesson Plan: Pass the Plates
  1. View the presentation below and list observations about different classrooms.
  2. Break into expert groups and discuss which classrooms would be best and worst for your type of learner OR list active listening strategies.
    1. Visual Learners
    2. Auditory Learners
    3. Read/Write Learners
    4. Kinesthetic Learners
    5. Silent Observers
  3. Move into groups with one person from each group above.
  4. For two minutes, you will discuss one of the following questions. Then, you'll jot down an interesting point, pass your card, and move on to the next question. **MAKE SURE YOU MAINTAIN THE POINT-OF-VIEW ON YOUR CARD!!!**
      •  (Example: Auditory learner: The lecture set up is DEFINITELY the best! You can hear the teacher from EVERYWHERE! Kinesthetic learner: That is insane! How can we do hands on stuff in a crowded lecture room? We need the design school's layout!)
    1. What are the important parts of a classroom?
    2. Where will you learn best?
    3. Persuade your group to think that your choice in classrooms is the best.
    4. What would you do if you had to be in someone else's room of choice?
  5. Debrief: Which perspective was the hardest for you to maintain? Why? What makes an awesome classroom?
4) Success Workshop: Destress and Refresh
  1. Game day outside!
  2. If you have missing work, do it now!!!!
