Course Description
Welcome to second semester AVID! AVID at LEC is designed to support students as they are streamlined into college level courses. In AVID, students learn and practice strategies for success so they can pull from this tool box as they take increasingly rigorous courses. Students also focus on choosing colleges and careers. AVID 2 is paired with ACA 111, a CCCC course to help students transition to community college classes. Our college liaison, Mr. Testa, instructs this course. In Freshman AVID, students will explore their answers to the questions:
  • Exploration: Who am I? Where am I going?
  • Structures: How will I get there? What strategies can I use to be as successful as possible?
  • Power: What power do I gain from learning? What will I have the power to give back to my community?

AVID at LEC will support students by...
...fostering positive attitudes toward school and higher education.
...helping students become knowledgeable about college and the skills they need to get there.
...providing students with opportunities to reflect upon how they learn and to make connections from class-to-class.
...encouraging students to work in collaborative groups to solve real-world problems that address multiple classes students are taking.

Lee County Transfer Goals:
Through the Advisory Program, students will work toward meeting the Lee County Transfer Goals. The hope is that by graduation, all Lee County students…
1. Can demonstrate effective and creative written and oral communication in various formats appropriate for purpose and audience.
2. Can, without significant scaffolding, comprehend and evaluate complex texts across a range of types and disciplines, and then construct arguments and convey intricate or multifaceted information.  Likewise, students are able independently to discern a speaker’s key points, request clarification, and ask relevant questions.
3. Can solve real-world problems by applying various strategies.
4. Are self-directed learners who can self-evaluate using different perspectives.
5. Are responsible/respectful leaders/citizens who can empathize in various situations
Classroom Expectations/Responsibilities:
In my classroom, we function as a community of college ready learners. I set high expectations for all students. To function smoothly, we all abide by the Five Finger Contract:
SAFETY (pinky finger): Students interact with each other in ways that foster a physically and emotionally safe environment.
LOYALTY (ring finger): We loyally strive to succeed, work efficiently, and seek opportunities to support our goals.
RESPECT (middle finger): We speak and act respectfully at all times. Maintain TSLANT (Take headphones out, Sit up straight, Listen, Ask and answer questions, Nod your head, Track the speaker).
ACCOUNTABILITY (pointer finger): Students come to class on time and prepared. Students do their own, original work and cite other works that they use (NO PLAGIARIZING!). Work is turned in on time and done to a high quality. Ask for help when you need it!
POSITIVITY (thumb): In our classroom, students assume positive intent.. Encourage each other! Speak kindly! Ask questions and maintain a CAN DO attitude!

Technology Policy: Only school related resources or personal music during work time should be accessed at school. Cell phones may be used ONLY when directed by the teacher to support instruction.

AVID Expectations and Materials
LEC is an AVID school. All students are required to maintain an AVID binder and to take and use Cornell notes in every class. An AVID binder will include the following:
  • A section in a binder (or a separate binder) for each class
  • A pencil pouch with a pen, a pencil, a highlighter, and sticky notes
  • An up-to-date Google Calendar
  • An up-to-date table of contents, syllabus, and Cornell notes for every class
  • Materials needed for the AVID Elective are: a notebook; computer; and charger. Tab the AVID section in your binder to include: Daily Tasks and TRFs. Bring your charger to class!
In addition, students will have a folder for each class in their Google Drive. Students will take and use Cornell notes in every class.

A Note about Homework
I rarely assign specific homework tasks in AVID. Instead, students are responsible for using AVID strategies to improve notes and study skills for other classes. Students WILL have homework if they are not working efficiently in class. With this in mind, IF you see your student spending an excessive amount of time (more than 20 min/night) on AVID homework, he or she is most likely NOT working  in class and it may be time for a parent/guardian, teacher, student meeting. Please contact me if you think this would help your student!
Positive Behavior Reinforcement
At LEC, we have awesome students who go above and beyond expectations! I love to let students and parents/guardians know when their students ROCK in the classroom. Students will also have opportunities to nominate their classmates for great behaviors as a learner. There is a box in the classroom to drop these off in. Example awesome learner behaviors include improving on an area of struggle, leadership on major projects, etc.

Consequences
If a student demonstrates behaviors that do not support learning, there are consequences.
Teacher Observed Negative Behavior Consequence
1st Observation Warning
2nd Observation 5 minutes refocusing
Multiple Observations Conference/Detention at my discretion

Tardy Policy
If a student is tardy to class more than three times, the student will fill out a reflection slip that will be kept on file. More than 5 tardies will result in a lunch detention and call home. Check your watches/phones when you are in the student center to arrive to class promptly. IF you are late, come in quietly and immediately start working. Do not disrupt your classmates.

Grading Policy and I-School/FAIL Policy
Grades are based on a 10 point scale (90-100 = an A). The grades students earn reflect their mastery of curriculum. If a student does not show mastery of a concept or skill, the student will have the opportunity and support to revise the task until mastery is shown. Mastery is an 80 or higher. Students who fail to do assignments will make up the assignment or receive an incomplete on his or her report card. Missing assignments will be marked “Missing” in the grade book and receive a grade of 55.  I grade using Total Points Earned. Every assignment is worth a certain number of points. The total value of all assignments and what the student earns get added up and divided for the student’s grade. Students will receive their first college credit from ACA. In addition, current ACA grades will count as a grade in the AVID class at each benchmark.
For Parents and Guardians:
I am excited to be your student’s AVID instructor! My goal is to provide your student with the skills he/she needs to succeed in ALL courses at LEC and CCCC. Please be active in your students’ education and the LEC family! Let me know if you see the need for additional support! There will be opportunities for parent/guardian involvement throughout the semester with parent nights, field trips, tutoring, and more.  I will also provide parents and guardians with ways to help enrich what students are learning in the classroom. Here are some ways to start:
1) Watch the flip class video on my blog  as soon as you can and send me a note so I know you watched it!
2) Check my class blog: http://msnickellecavid2.blogspot.com/. This is where you can see what your student is doing and can be working on at home.
3) Start the careers and colleges dialogue going! Drive through and visit college campuses. Share your school experiences!
4) Help students stay informed about current events, research, and careers by listening to NPR (91.5 or 91.9) on the way to school!
5) Email me if you are interestested in:
  • sharing information about your career in April
  • chaperoning our March field trip to UNCG
  • meeting to plan for AVID and school improvement (meeting times to be planned for YOUR convenience)
  • donating supplies or food for classes and events
Thank you for your support! Sincerely,

                     Ms. Foster
