1) Warm Up: Logic Puzzler Competition

  1. Write the answers in your notebook.
  2. The first person finished with correct answers wins a prize.

  1. Take out "The Whole Picture" sheet.
  2. Complete Representation 2.
  3. Highlight the y-intercept and slope.
  4. Give titles to both Representations 1 and 2.

1) Warm Up: Creative Writing (5 min)

  1. Read the prompt below and respond in one of the following ways:
    1. Argue or agree with the quote. Does poetry make the world more bearable? Why or why not?
    2. List what you think makes the world more bearable and why.
    3. Draw something that makes your crummy days bearable.
    4. Write a poem that makes the world more bearable.

2) Literacy Block: How to Read a Poem:

    1. Before you read: Word Splash! When your teacher says, "We are reading poetry!, what happens in your head?
    2. As you read: 
      1. Look at the text features in the article.
      2. Create a cheat sheet for how to read a poem. (Hint: Use the table of contents and subheadings).
      3. Read "Read with a pencil" and "Examine the basic subject of the poem" while taking notes on what to do as you read a poem.
      4. Skim the rest of the article.
3) Lesson Plan: Where I'm From by George Ella Lyons
  1. Getting Ready:
    1. Listen to the poem.
    2. Partner read the poem annotating as you go.
    3. Discuss: What is the purpose of the poem? How does the poet convey her purpose?
    4. Watch the video below of another student's version of the poem.
